In today's society and technology, you are never far from communication. People can be reached by emails, texts, phones, letters, and in person-face to face. And yet, we are terrible communicators. We may avoid conversations because we don't want to approach a subject that needs to be talked about. We may avoid someone because they are always negative in their outlook on everything. Sometimes things seem to painful to talk about to someone else. Sometimes we are too proud and other times embarrassed. Or we don't want to bother someone else with our own problems.
We, as humans, need communication. A lot of people cannot keep a confidence. We need to be a confidence for our friends-a haven where they can come and unload their fears and disappointments and burdens and know they are safe. We need to make the time to be there for others. Being a listener takes effort and time. But we also need to be good communicators.
"He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends."
We, as Christians, are a body. We each make up a different part of the whole.
We must each be responsible in what God has given us and then work together as a whole to have unity.
"For the body is not one member, but many.
If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?
But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him."
Romans 12:4-8
So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness."
We don't all have the same gifts and God doesn't expect us to all do the same things but we have been given two ears and a compassionate heart. By listening we can discern what to do to be able to help. Sometimes we can't do anything but listen. Other times we can offer help. Scripture can be shared for encouragement. And best of all, we can pray. As we are living one day at a time, we need to be sensitive of those around us and be willing to take the time to talk! When was the last time you picked up the phone and called someone and said you just wanted to talk to them. Maybe God has laid someone on your heart, don't ignore Him-send a card to let them know you are thinking of them and would love to get coffee and talk! And best of all, let them know that you are praying for them and then stop right there and pray.
