"Blue moon" appears to have been a colloquial expression long before it developed its calendrical senses. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first reference to a blue moon comes from a proverb recorded in 1528:
If they say the moon is blue,
We must believe that it is true.
Saying the moon was blue was equivalent to saying the moon was made of green (or cream) cheese; it indicated an obvious absurdity. In the 19th century, the phrase until a blue moon developed, meaning "never." The phrase, once in a blue moon today has come to mean "every now and then" or "rarely"—whether it gained that meaning through association with the lunar event remains uncertain." This information came from www.infoplease.com.
Tonight when you look at the moon you are supposedly looking at a "Blue Moon". It was supposed to refer to the 3rd full moon in a season of 4 full moons. (what??) or the second full moon in one month-that is tonight!
I hope I never cease to be amazed at the world that God created. I love to look at creation and think about how He made it from nothing in six days!
Genesis 1:14-19
"And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
And the evening and the morning were the fourth day."
As I live one day at a time I don't ever want to take the world we live in for granted. There are so many gorgeous places here in the United States-the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains, The Atlantic Ocean, the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River, the Appalachian Mountains, Hoover Dam, the Redwood Forest. Don't let it be only 'once in a blue moon' that you thank God for the amazing world He created, for placing us here on earth, and then giving us the opportunity to receive salvation and be saved from an eternity separated from Him.
Psalm 8:3-4
"When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?"
