We say phrases sometimes and we don't even think about what they really mean.
"Third Time's a Charm, Three strikes and you're out! Three's a crowd". The first two really struck me today when I thought about the meaning behind them and how I really shouldn't say them anymore because I don't believe them. As Christians we should not be superstitious so to say that the third time is a charm would be wrong. There isn't any charm about the third time. And what happens if it doesn't happen the third time-do you give up? Does it not mean it is going to happen? If you look to God and follow His plan for your life then He will lead and direct you.
Psalm 23:2-3
"He makes me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake."
Proverbs 3:5-6
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
I also don't care for the phrase 'three strikes and you're out'. Would we really tell our children that when they fail us or do something wrong-when it happened the third time what would you do? I also paralleled this to my relationship with God. What would happen if God told that to me? I would have been tossed out a long time ago because of my human and sin nature. Thankfully, I am still forgiven even after sinner three times, as long as I ask for forgiveness. Christ's blood covers it all! As a Christian I am learning to sin less but I won't be perfect until I reach heaven and receive my new body. But I am assured that once I received my salvation I can never lose it. Hallelujah!
John 10:28-29
"And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them
out of My hand. My Father, which gave them to Me, is greater then all; and no man is able to
pluck them out of My Father’s hand."
As we live one day at a time we should be in this world but not of it. God tells us to "stand out" or be different. We shouldn't talk like the unsaved. Sometimes we become complacent or lazy. We must always be on our guard. We may not want to stand out or be singled out because it may be uncomfortable or allow us to be ridiculed, but this is not our home. We are here on a mission. We need to be sharing the gospel so that all of those around us can also be saved.
2 Corinthians 6:16-17
"And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord,"
So, leave the superstitious idioms out of your vocabulary. Fill it with verses you have memorized from God's Word like "This is the Day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." (Ps. 118:24)
