I was able to visit New York City in the early 1990s. This was my first view from our plane as we came into New York. Then September 11, 2001, happened and it changed our history forever. We spent days in front of the television watching videos of what took place and hearing stories about those involved and those that lost their lives. I'm sure most of us remember exactly where we were when we first heard. I had been home to my parent's in Ohio because my dad had back surgery and I was flying back to Florida on the 10th of September. There was a terrible storm and they were cancelling all the outbound flights. I made the last flight out and we had to make a connection through Philadelphia. We were ahead of the storm and I spent the night with my in-laws. I was at the top of the Skyway bridge on my was home when I turned on the radio and heard the news that the first plane had crashed into the tower.
These pictures came from a trip that I took with my husband in 2005. By this time most of the debris was gone and a memorial was being put up.
Time had passed, about 4 years, and yet being there made it seem like it was just yesterday. September 11th has become Patriot Day. I am thankful for the day of remembrance because it reminds me of the country I live and the freedoms that we have because of our forefathers and those that continue to serve. I cannot imagine living anywhere else. We may have problems and not agree with everything that is going on, yet we are so rich and still have the freedom of religion, speech, and so many other things.
Remembrance: to be able to bring to one's mind an awareness of something from the past. We, as humans, celebrate or honor or remember certain people or events that took place in our lives. We have parties for our birthdays and we celebrate our anniversaries-remembering the day we got married.
As Christians we also celebrate or remember things as well. One event that we do "in remembrance" is the Lord's Supper or communion.
If you have been saved by admitting you are a sinner, repented of that sin , and asked Christ to be your Savior then the next normal steps are to follow the two ordinances given to the New Testament Church in the Bible-the Lord's Supper and Baptism.
Before Christ was crucified He had a dinner with his disciples and then he told us how to remember Him.
"And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me."
When we take communion, it reminds us of when Christ gave Himself as the ultimate sacrifice on the cross for our sins-His body and His blood. Without it, we wouldn't be able to have a relationship with God.
As we live one day at a time, we move forward but we must not forget-we must not forget those that helped make our country free and still protect our freedoms today. We must also not forget Christ and His redemptive plan of salvation-because when this life is over you have a choice-Heaven or Hell. Remember and never forget!
